Room

Room F3 - Track 3: Talks

Audience

Anyone struggling with (or is scared of) test automation.

Key-Learning

  • Haters: Learn how to delegate (your hate) to people who will not flip tables.
  • Terrified: Your fear is justified. Code is scary stuff!
  • Skeptics: Get over yourself. Learn how to code.
  • Enthusiasts: Get over your tooling fetish (and spread your enthuasiasm!)
  • Capable: You’re “special”. Please, spread your wisdom. The world needs you.

Test automation for people who hate test automation. Welcome to the wild world of code and robots. A place where even the bravest souls tremble at the thought of automated testing.

My experience with test automation isn’t necessarily positive. I’ve tried to give it an honest go, but the code stole my sanity. Some people like coding. I’m not one of them. I get very agitated.

I tried different tools, different languages, and worked on different projects. After a few years of giving it my all, I finally gave in and quit test automating (after almost throwing my laptop out the window). In the test world, however, it’s hard to work around test automation, because it’s an integral part of software testing.

If you’re able to sit through 20 minutes of jokes about test automation (and five minutes of actual tips), you will learn how to work around your inability to automate. Perhaps you will even find out why you’re not one of those test automation engineers that love what they do.

So there you have it. Test automation for those who despise it. Remember, laughter is the best medicine, especially when dealing with code. Happy testing, or should we say, happy jesting!
